Almost 2 weeks ago, on Thursday, October 4, we loaded up the car and headed to Delaware to visit with Scott's family.

We decided it would be best to leave pretty early for our 10 hour drive. That way we'd arrive with plenty of daylight left for the kids to run around and get out their energy. So, we got up early, fed Lucy and got her taken care of, then woke the kids up at 5:45. We quickly did potty breaks, changed clothes and loaded them into the car. They were pretty excited that our "adventure" was starting when it was still dark out. They kept asking for flashlights so that our car could see in the dark. I guess they think driving in the early morning is different than driving at night. :)

Our hope was that they would fall back asleep for a couple of hours and then once they woke up, we could stop for breakfast. This plan worked perfectly. I love it when that happens! They both fell back to sleep within the first 30 minutes of our drive and slept for about 2 hours.

Since they were quite specific about what they wanted for breakfast (pancakes, syrup, and orange juice) we knew we needed to stop at a McDonald's, of course. :) Luckily the weather was great, so it wasn't a problem getting Lucy out and letting her walk around and take care of business. Lucy rode in the back of our in her crate the whole time and did so great. There were many times I even forgot she was there!

Anyway, we stopped at "Old McDonald's" and the kids were both pretty excited. I guess everything is more exciting on a road trip?!

I was excited because this McDonald's had a fenced in area outside so I took the kids out there while Scott ordered our food and they ran around.

Then we sat outside so we could keep an eye on our car since Lucy was hanging out in there. After about a 30 minute break, it was time to load up and hit the road again!

I made sure to stock up on little entertaining things for Addison and Fischer to play with. We also brought many books, stickers and paper, movies and their Leapsters. We also played a few car games... which resulted in the most entertaining portion of our drive, of the morning anyway. So we were doing rhymes, which Fischer loves. We eventually got into the "uck" family. I'm sure you can see where this is going. I think we started with "yuck" or "duck." And Fischer casually said the "f word." He didn't/doesn't know it is a bad word. He was just innocently making a rhyme! But he saw our reactions and realized something was up so he said it over and over and over again. I couldn't control my laughter but Scott finally had to get stern and tell him to stop. It was pretty funny though.

Then there's Addison, who either doesn't get rhyming at all yet, or just doesn't care. So we'd say something like "lake" and she's say "Cat!!" And she'd be so excited about her answer. I've tried so many times to explain to her what rhyming means... I guess she'll get it when she's ready. So funny. :)

So after another 2-3 hours, it was time for a potty break for all of us. We stopped, pottied, walked Lucy and got some "cowboy jerkey." That's what Addison and Fischer call beef jerkey, and I'm not quite sure why. So we snacked on that for awhile since our next stop for lunch wouldn't be for another few hours.

Stay tuned to hear about the rest of Day 1 of our trip!
